ABOUT

Phillip Richard Jannecke Newman, otherwise known as Boytchie, is an emerging contemporary artist working in mixed media painting, drawing, and sculpture. His work is rooted in expressionism, with the artist's studio becoming a generative space for experimentation and play. His work explores themes around coloured identity, slavery, decolonisation, dystopia, love and death.

Boytchie’s fluid approach to self expression stems from his drawings, breathing life into his creations. Boytchie was born in 2000 and grew up in Kuils River, South Africa. He always had an aptitude for art from a young age and took art seriously from the age of nine. He continued his visual art studies in high school. He then went to study art at Stellenbosch University, completing his Honours in Fine Arts in 2022.

In 2023, Boytchie presented his first solo exhibition, My Precious, at WORLDART Gallery in Cape Town. Selected group exhibitions include INDEX, RMB Latitudes, Shepstone Gardens (2023); Wildflowers do care where they grow, 6 Derwent Street, Cape Town (2023); Greatest Hits, presented by the Association for Visual Arts at the Leeuwenhof Slave Remembrance Gallery, Cape Town (2023), and Filthy Plinths, Under Projects, Cape Town (2022).
